In the first battle of Katipunan in the 74th UAAP men’s basketball season, Ateneo de Manila University trounced University of the Philippines, 77-57, to earn their fifth straight victory at the Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.

Overturning the Diliman-based team two-point lead in the first quarter, the Eagles bagged double-digit point advantage in the succeeding three quarters to seal the game with a 20-point lead.

Blue Eagles’ coach Norman Black, who was quite pleased with the defense his team put up in the last three quarters, said “We didn’t play bad defense in the first, it’s just UP had a great offense.”

The defensive stance of the Ateneo team was balanced out by rookie Kiefer Ravena, who dealt the Maroons with 15 points and four steals. He was followed by fellow rookie Greg Slaughter’s performance at 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Helping further the onslaught to the UP team was UAAP veteran Kirk Long, who bounced to lead his team in the final quarter and scored 14 points during the whole game. Emman Monfort and Nico Salva also kept Ricky Dandan’s wards at their toes by contributing 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Fighting Maroons’ Mike Silungan, Jose Manuel and Mike Gamboa tried to catch-up and contributed eight points each to the team.

The Blue Eagles will try to bid for a six straight win versus the University of Santo Tomas Tigers next Thursday; while a Carlo Gomez-less Fighting Maroons will try to break their consecutive losses against the strong performing Adamson Soaring Falcons, after the former landed a gut punch to Salva.
