The Growling Tigers sunk its teeth and preyed upon University of the Philippines to win by a count of 68-49 in the 74th University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum on Sunday.
Despite losing Jeric Teng right after the first quarter due to a sprained ankle, Jeric Fortuna took the helm for University of Santos Tomas, scoring 16 points and managing 9 rebounds to get past a dismally shooting University of the Philippines.
Closely following him was Carmelo Afuang shooting for a season best performance of 13 points and managing 5 rebounds.
Helping bring the ball more to their favor, the Tigers also astounded with 58 rebounds versus UP’s 33.
Leading in the rebounding category for the España-based were Karim Abdul and Chris Camus who managed for 14 and 12, respectively.
On the opposite side of the court, the Maroons tried to repeat its stellar performance versus the Tamaraws with the first quarter’s back-to-back baskets from Anjelo Montecastro and Carlo Gomez, as well as the final quarter’s dunk from Alinko Mbah but it fell short to the 19 pt. lead stretched by the Tigers at the end of the game.
With no double-digit scorer and just five assists on their side, Montecastro led the Diliman pack at a
measly 9 points followed by Mike Silungan with 8.
The previous game’s top scorer, Jet Manuel, only managed to score 5 points in 25 minutes of play.
After ending their losing streak, the Tigers placed equal for a 3-3 slate with De La Salle University, who they will battling last for the first round of the men’s division on Thursday.
The Maroons, with a 2-4 record in tow near the bottom of the heap, will face a highly rated contender in Adamson University for their last game of the round.
