University of the East bounced back to outplay an injury-plagued De La Salle University five in a huge upset to score their second win of the season, 74-69, in the 74th University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.
Overturning the Archers’ lead in the first quarter, the Warriors sustained their blitz over the Taft squad until the final quarter and managed to stretch the lead to as high as 13 points.
Ecstatic Red Warriors Coach Jerry Codiñera attributed their triumph of never letting the losses bother his team but rather getting back again.
Boosted by stellar performances of their veterans, Paul Zamar was the top scorer for the game at 19 points. He was followed by John Noble who was able to field his season high at 16. Lucas Tagarda led the rebounding department with 11.
On the opposite court, the De La Salle team was met with the loss of Yutien Andrada after his sudden right knee injury with only 1:08 left in the first quarter. Second year guard Luigi Dela Paz also followed suit after a collision with teammate Maui Villanueva, but managed to finish the contest.
With all of their fielded players being able to shoot a hoop, the Archers tried to bring back the lead to their favor but fell short to the Warrior’s assault. Norbert Torres led the pack with 12 points and 8 rebounds.
De La Salle now slides further with a 4-5 standing at par with University of Santo Tomas, who coincidentally will be their next opponent this Thursday.
On the other hand, UE will also try to get past their current 2-7 standing on that day against still unbeaten Ateneo de Manila University.
