Lyceum of the Philippines University staved off Jose Rizal University’s endgame fightback, while Arellano University frustrates Mapúa Institute of Technology once again in Friday’s 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) seniors basketball wars at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Pirates, saw their 13 point lead evaporate in the last two minutes, but managed to outlast the Heavy Bombers in overtime, 84-80, to gain possession of fifth place with a 3-2 mark.

Guy Mbida, who finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, knocked down the game-winner with 16 ticks on the clock to lift the shorthanded Pirates to victory.

LPU played without veteran guard Shane Ko, who was a late scratch due to a foot injury suffered during the recent typhoon that ravaged Manila. Guards Dexter Zamora and seldom used Allyn Malabanan, who had the unenviable task of containing JRU’s ace shooter Philip Paniamogan, carried the flag for Ko and scored 13 apiece.

The 23-year old Paniamogan, who kept the Bombers in the game with eight points in the fourth quarter and overtime periods, scored 24 points. Michael Mabulac added 20 markers and seven rebounds, while Abdul Razak Abdul Wahab wound up with 10 points and 13 rebounds. JRU gains their third defeat in five outings.

Earlier, the Chiefs got back on the winning track and continued the Cardinals’ endgame woes after salvaging a 68-63 squeaker in the first game.

Keith Agovida scored a team-leading 12 points with nine rebounds. American center Dioncee Holts, guard John Pinto, and forward Ralph Salcedo each putting up 10 apiece for Arellano, who are a week removed from a tough loss against four-time defending champion San Beda College and earned their third win in four outings.

Andoy Estrella led the Cardinals, now winless in five contests, with 20 points.
